I am undeniably a fervent countryside enthusiast, and whenever I find myself in Lisbon, I unfailingly seize the opportunity to venture into the various captivating corners of this enchanting country. Just last Thursday, I had the distinct privilege of embarking on a memorable journey to the Companhia das Lezírias in Samora Correia. Situated a mere 40 minutes outside the vibrant city of Lisbon, this extraordinary destination is a veritable feast for the senses and a resounding testament to the marvels of sustainable modern rural living. It's noteworthy to mention that Companhia das Lezírias also stands as one of Europe's most vital wetland ecosystems, exemplifying a profound commitment to nature conservation, and actively fostering innovation through extensive research and development collaborations with universities and dedicated researchers.
Founded in 1836, the Companhia das Lezírias has gracefully evolved in tandem with the ever-changing tapestry of the Portuguese nation. Today, it stands as a flourishing enterprise, proudly embracing the distinction of being the largest agricultural and forestry operation in the entire country. Within the sprawling landscape of Companhia das Lezírias, one can embark on an enthralling odyssey that encompasses diverse facets of rural life, ranging from the meticulous horse breeding program, centred around the renowned PSL – purebred Lusitano horse, to the cherished montado, a distinct cork oak plantation found exclusively in the sun-soaked realms of Portugal and Spain. The agricultural panorama further unfolds with rice cultivation, cattle breeding, corn production, olive oil production, and the cultivation of exceptional wines (Herdade de Catapereiro), all executed with unwavering commitment to nurturing the surrounding fauna and flora. The preservation of habitats and the implementation of sustainable property management practices serve as guiding principles here, epitomized by their steadfast support for knowledge dissemination through the EVOA project (Tagus Estuary Birdwatching and Conservation Area). Without a shadow of a doubt, a visit to this remarkable sanctuary is an essential pilgrimage for anyone exploring the wonders of Portugal.
The significance of stud farms at Companhia das Lezírias was substantially amplified in 2013 when the Portuguese State entrusted them with the management of the historic Coudelaria de Alter, the oldest stud farm in the world operating uninterruptedly in the same location with its roots dating back to 1748. This property, Tapada do Arneiro, is located 2 hours and half away from Lisbon near the beautiful city of Portalegre.
Presently, Companhia das Lezírias proudly represents three irons: CL, AR, and CN, with the first being Companhia das Lezírias itself and the second and third emanating from the esteemed Coudelaria de Alter (Alter Real and Coudelaria Nacional). Their commitment extends beyond tradition, as they actively foster research and development endeavours focused on the unique PSL breed of horses, ensuring its preservation and evolution.
Finally, a mention to the tourism area which comprises a holiday village in Compania das Lezirias with wooden houses, a green area and swimming pools and a multitude of tours and activities that you can book to learn more about this wonderful rural experience whether in Samora Correia or Tapada do Arneiro.
A word of advice for eager travellers: weekend visits to the captivating Samora Correia property are in high demand, with reservations fully booked until September 2024. To secure your coveted spot, meticulous planning well in advance is highly recommended, alongside prompt contact with Companhia das Lezírias (turismo@cl.pt )to arrange your personalized itinerary. We wholeheartedly endorse and encourage this transformative experience; it is an opportunity not to be missed!
